What it's like to meet a Power RangerI forget by now if it was a phone call at my desk or an e-mail to my inbox. I also don’t remember who, exactly, contacted me first about it. All I remember was the rush of excitement that swept over me the joy that overtook both the me of today and the me of 20 years ago. Someone had offered me an opportunity that left me slack-jawed.I was going to meet a Power Ranger. In the latest episode of our “Guinness World Records OMG!” YouTube series, On The Road, Oli White and I headed to Rosharron, Texas, to see if none other than the original Green Ranger himself, Jason David Frank, could break a record for the most pine boards broken in freefall. You can watch how the whole thing went down here:videoFor me to be there and adjudicate that record was a stark reminder of how great this job can be. True story: as a kid, I was a dues-paying member of the official Power Rangers fan club (well, my mom paid the dues). My 10 th birthday party? A trip to Pizza Hut followed by 10 of my friends going to see “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie.”Before writing this piece, I went home to visit my parents, hoping to take a picture with the Green Ranger action figure I knew was still up in the attic. My dad told me he had taken it to a toy donation bin with a bunch of others a few months ago. I’m still trying to forgive him.So, to have a chance to meet JDF (which I’m now referring to him as because we’re obviously new best friends) was – while maybe a level down from "dream come true" – certainly a highlight of my time at Guinness World Records. Look, there we are together! The coolest thing about the whole experience – besides, you know, watching a Power Ranger punch boards in half WHILE FALLING THOUSANDS OF FEET FROM THE SKY – was seeing how JDF embraced his history and his fandom. How many cult actors or child stars immediately try to distance themselves from their most famous project? It’s like they feel ashamed of the work they did. But, as you see in the video above, JDF still embraces the Power Ranger legacy. He talks about it openly, jokes about it freely. For crying out loud, he spray-painted his hair green just for the attempt. Judging this attempt could’ve easily turned into me meeting a legitimate childhood idol, only to learn he’d grown bitter and full of contempt for playing a role that provided a seminal part of my youth.Instead, he was a great guy, a fun and gracious person, and now an official Guinness World Records holder.I’d say it was a perfect experience, but really, part of me deep down had hoped Goldar would come to try and foil the attempt, only to have us defeat him and a bunch of Putties with our coordinated martial arts attack.Alas, this will have to do.
NBA’s All-Star Jam Session scores string of world recordsProving that record-breaking is an endeavor fit for all, the last weekend in February provided quite a study in contrast for Guinness World Records events around the globe. Most notably, while GWR editor-in-chief Craig Glenday traveled to Nepal to measure a new world's shortest man, I visited Orlando, Florida, USA, to meet instead with a lot of very, very tall men. These were not just any tall men, but some of the most skilled professionals in the world: National Basketball Association all stars. The occasion? Guinness World Records' annual trip to the NBA's All-Star Jam Session, a weekend-long fan and player festival surrounding the league's yearly exhibition pitting the best players from each conference against each other. This year's game took place in Orlando and the festivities resulted in plenty of record-breaking action. The first record to fall actually fell twice within the span of an hour. Evan Turner (USA) of the Philadelphia 76ers started the activity with a record-setting 14 shots made from behind a backboard in one minute, earning a temporary moment in the sun.But Turner's triumph wouldn't last long as, approximately 45 minutes later, Minnesota Timberwolves rookie sensation Ricky Rubio (Spain) hit 18 shots in a minute, including a finishing flurry of 15 in a row. That would be the end of records broken by players on the weekend, proving that even the best players in the world are not guaranteed to hold world records. In particular, members of the East and West teams found no success attempting to establish a record for the most half court shots made in one minute by a team. Needing 11 buckets, a team of LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Paul Pierce, Rajon Rando, and Deron Williams came closest with seven successful baskets. But records would continue to fall nonetheless. One of my favorite sights from the weekend was watching a record broken for the "most between-the-legs basketball dunks by a team of mascots in one minute." The mascots included Sly (New Jersey Nets), Grizz (Memphis Grizzlies), Hooper (Detroit Pistons), Rufus Lynx (Charlotte Bobcats), and Coyote (San Antonio Spurs) with a successful 11 such trick slams in 60 seconds. The group was so happy with their success that yours truly even received a congratulatory kiss from Coyote. The final two records to fall at this year's Jam Session resulted in some pretty cool sights, as well. Attempting to break his own record set at last year's event, festival emcee Michael Garcia (USA) donned jersey after jersey after jersey to hit a new mark for the "most professional NBA jerseys worn at once."It took more than 6 minutes to achieve but Garcia was finally able to one-up last year's performance with a record 35 jerseys worn at once. The end result made Garcia quite literally three times the size he used to be.And the last record to fall was truly a total fan experience. Garcia and his team took an oversized replica basketball around the Jam Session convention floor across the entire weekend, getting fans to apply their autographs toward the "most signatures on a piece of sports memorabilia."Including former NBA stars Robert Horry and Chris Webber, as well as comedian and actor JB Smoove, a total of 515 signatures were collected on one of the more indelible keepsakes of the weekend. Most of the world saw the All-Star Game played Sunday night, a tense affair that fittingly came down to the final possession. But for those who were there, it was obvious that the excitement had lasted all weekend long.

Running the Virgin Money London Marathon 2015? Find out how you could be a world record holderCongratulations if you’re running the Virgin Money London Marathon this year.
Record Holder Q+A: Wouter van den Bosch, heaviest rideable bikeAt the recent launch of Guinness World Records 2013, we had the opportunity to speak to several record holders featured in the new book. We asked them the questions world record fans most wanted to know about, and now here are the answers! Today's Q+A is with Wouter van den Bosch, the creator of the heaviest rideable bike. His "Monsterbike" weighs in at 750kg (1650lb), and is frequently ridden around his hometown of Arnhem in the Netherlands. Q - What were you thinking when you made the bike, why was it created? A - I've always been fascinated by mechanics and building things. It was part of my final exam exhibition for my fine art degree - and I really wanted to make something big. Many artists start with a concept, and then find the medium best-suited to expressing this. I was the opposite - I was offered this huge tractor tire, then thought, "What can I make using this?" Q - Have you any funny stories relating to the construction? A - Well, some teachers at my art school told me I would never be able to ride it, that it would only be a nice thing to look at. This only served to make me more determined to make the bike such that I could ride it, and I did! I also think it's pretty funny how the video of me riding the bike has been watched over 6 million times - how did that happen?! Q - Did you originally intend to make a record-breaking bike? A - No, I just built it and it turned out to be record-worthy! The team at Guinness World Records saw my video on YouTube and got in contact after that.Q - Is it designed for a large person? A - No, it's not really that suited for a large person, actually. In fact, it should be a little larger, and the seat raised up higher for me (6'6) to be able to ride it comfortably. I have the seat this height for aesthetic reasons. Q - What would you do to prevent your record being broken? A - Fill the front tire with lead! No, perhaps I would find another record to break instead. I have some ideas, but just building things is what is most important to me. Maybe a human-powered flying machine... Q - What's your favourite record, other than your own? A - It would be one I saw in the 1990 edition of the book when I was a child. The world's largest tree, "General Sherman" I think it was called. Q - How does it feel to be a Guinness World Records title holder? A - It's a big honour, to be in this book where everyone is so special, or has done something to such an extreme. A real childhood dream come true! Q - Where will you keep your Guinness World Records certificate? A - Maybe in my bathroom? Or on the back of my front door? I'm proud of it, but don't want to be too much of a show-off!

Jack Daniel's whiskey marks birthday with six world recordsBy Kimberly Partrick in New YorkJack Daniel would have turned 161 years old this month, and so the Tennessee-based whiskey brand decided to bring the celebration to the Big Apple for a larger than life (literally) event during which they successfully set six amazing world records!First on the agenda was counting the individual bottles in what would soon be recognized as the world's largest bottle mosaic. An astounding 2,120 empty 1-litre bottles of Jack Daniel's were used to form a portrait of the man himself measuring 5.5 m (18 ft 1 in) long and 4.36 m (14 ft 4 in) wide. From the roof of the adjacent building, it really was quite a sight to see!Next was an attempt for the largest bottle of whiskey, which contained 184 litres (40.47 gal, 48.61 US gal) of Jack Daniel's whiskey. This was a greater volume than the previous record holder, but we needed to confirm that it was also physically larger as well. The bottle clocked in with a height of 1.52 m (5 ft) and a diameter of 48.5 cm (19 in), besting the previous record and becoming the new record holder. Then the real celebration began when co-adjudicator Amanda Mochan and myself adjudicated as birthday party attendees attempted to set the record for the fastest time to build a 20 shot glass pyramid. Many tried, but no one could beat Newark, Delaware's Samantha Sherlock, who now holds the record with an impressive 10.56 seconds!Soon enough it was time for all of the fans to get together to sing "Happy Birthday" to Jack. Once 250 participants had gathered, each of them lit a candle, sang the song, and simultaneously blew out their candles, setting a new record for the most people to blow out a candle simultaneously. Kudos to the enthusiastic participants who found many creative ways to keep their candles lit until the appointed time, even with a bit of a summer breeze in the air.Once "Happy Birthday" had been sung, 19 volunteers got to be a part of playing the song in a completely different way - in a bottle orchestra! Each participant had 25 bottles (Jack Daniel's bottles, naturally) which had been partially filled with water and tuned to produce the 25 notes in "Happy Birthday." After a couple of practice runs, everyone really had the hang of their new instruments. The final performance was remarkably synchronized and thoroughly successful, breaking the existing record with 475 bottles played during the performance.Throughout the event, fans of Jack Daniel's lined up around the plaza to sign a giant birthday card to Jack in an attempt to set the record for the most contributions to a single greeting card. This was a record that Jack Daniel's fans worldwide could take part in. Many people who weren't able to make it all the way to New York "signed" the card virtually via Facebook and their contributions were transcribed directly into the card. The final result was a truly amazing array of 1,075 individual contributions which filled the inside of the card from end to end and top to bottom. Presenting the card to the fans at the culmination of the event was a wonderful way to top off such a record-breaking birthday party.Congratulations to Jack Daniel's and to all of their enthusiastic fans who helped make this birthday party one for the record books!
Honda demonstrates spirit of innovation by setting fastest lawnmower world recordFor many reluctant gardeners, cutting the lawn is a time-consuming chore, but that surely wouldn’t be the case if you had this super-charged grass trimmer built by Honda.Named the Mean Mower, the high-performance garden vehicle has set a new world record for fastest lawnmower, after being driven at an incredible 116mph (187kph).Driven by Top Gear writer Piers Ward for the attempt, the 1000cc 109HP mower’s average speed broke the previous record by almost 30mph.The successful attempt took place at the IDIADA Proving Ground, in Tarragona, Spain, last month. As well as being required to cut grass and look like a lawnmower in order to fully satisfy meet Guinness World Records rules, the mower had to record the same run, in both directions, within an hour – with the average speed taken of both runs. The idea for Mean Mower was to demonstrate Honda’s sprit of innovation, its motor sport heritage, and that it makes more than just cars.Designed and built in the UK by Honda (UK)’s British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) partner, Team Dynamics, the team re-engineered a Honda HF2620 Lawn Tractor from the ground-up, adding an all-new fabricated chassis, custom-made from 4130 chromoly, to provide a strong, safe but very light platform.A 1000cc engine from a Honda VTR Firestorm was used, along with a bespoke suspension and wheels from an ATV.The cutter deck was custom-made in fibre-glass, to reduce weight, while, the grass bag provides a home for the fuel tank, a high capacity oil cooler and a secondary water cooling radiator. The mower can cut grass at around 15mph, thanks to two electric motors on the cutter deck, spinning 3mm steel cutting cable at an incredible 4000rpm - more than double the flat-out speed of the original HF2620 from which it is derived.Based on feedback from Honda Yuasa Racing drivers, three times BTCC champion Matt Neal and reigning champion Gordon Shedden, the mower features a custom-made paddle shift six-speed gear system. Additionally it has a custom-made Cobra sports seat, a Scorpion exhaust system and a steering rack taken from a Morris Minor. The result of this remarkable feat of engineering is a lawn mower set-up and geared to achieve a top speed in excess of 130mph, weighing just 140kgm, producing 96Nm of torque, an incredible PTW ratio of 532bhp/tonne and an estimated 0-60 of just four seconds.Last month’s attempt beat a benchmark of 87.83 mph set by Don Wales while driving the Project Runningblade lawnmower, in Pendine, UK, in May 2010.Speaking after the successful attempt, Honda spokesperson Ellie Ostinelli said: “The original brief for Mean Mower was to create the world’s fastest lawnmower – and now it officially is, by some distance! We are all delighted to hold a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title and we’d like to thank everyone who was involved in what has been a challenging yet incredibly exciting project.”The record-breaking mower generated widespread international press coverage, including Fox News, the Daily Mail and the Daily Telegraph. The attempt also saw Honda raise awareness of its commitment to innovation via social media, with a video documenting the lawnmower’s journey into the record books receiving over 900,000 views on Honda’s YouTube channel.video

Oprah's $12 Million Museum Donation, and Duchess of Cambridge to Christen New Ship - News in World RecordsOprah Winfrey is set to make a $12,000,000 (£7.7M) donation to a new museum of African American History in Washington D.C. - her largest yet to the cause.Winfrey previously donated $1,000,000 to the museum, which is set to open in 2015, and will contain a theatre named after the media personality. The museum will tell the stories of African American history, from slavery through the civil rights movement to the present day.The donation is just one of many philanthropic activities undertaken by Winfrey, who is a self-made billionaire, and holds several Guinness World Records titles including Largest TV contract, Most powerful person in television, and Highest annual earnings for a television personality (female). The Duchess of Cambridge will shortly christen a new Princess Cruises ship, The Royal Princess, at a ceremony in Southampton ( live stream). The ceremony, which will include the traditional smashing of a bottle over the hull, will be the Duchess' last public engagement before giving birth to a baby, due in July. While the new liner will feature a glass-bottomed walkway and accommodate some 3,600 guests, it will not be the Largest passenger liner - that title belongs to Royal Caribbean's MS Allure of the Seas, at 362 m (1,187 ft) long, 66 m (215 ft) wide and weighing 225,282 gross tonnage. When the Duchess married Prince William in April 2011, the event had the Most live streams for a single event - with 72 million live views from 188 countries on the official royal YouTube channel alone! Finally, have you ever been put off by people wearing low-hanging trousers or shorts? One beachfront town in the US state of New Jersey certainly has.The mayor of Wildwood, NJ, Ernest Troiano, is set to introduce a ban on trousers, jeans, and shorts which hang lower than 3 inches (7.5cm) below the hips. This is in addition to a ban on swimwear on the town's boardwalk, and a requirement that people wear shirts and shoes at all times. Offenders could be fined up to $100 (£64) for a first breach of the dress code.Might we suggest the mayor bring the Largest leather belt to Wildwood? The 19.13 m (62 ft 9 in) long, 68 cm (26.75 in) wide belt would surely help keep many pairs of trousers up!
Royal baby still nameless, Dennis Farina dies, Aston Martin celebrates 100 years - News in World RecordsIn sad news, American actor Dennis Farina died Monday. Known for his many Hollywood roles as a man of the law, Farina (pictured above) actually spent 20 years as a real-life police detective before "playing one on TV." He was most famous, perhaps, for his recurring role on the iconic show "Law & Order," in which he appeared for a total of 46 episodes as Detective Jerry Fontana. The series and its various spin-offs hold the record for most successful current cop show franchise, with more than 1,000 episodes produced and counting.Looking for new Royal Baby news? Sorry folks! Besides looking for some extra search engine results, we have nothing new to add about the little prince. Now that we know the child is born and that he's appeared under a pile of blankets, we all wait for a name (personally, I think George is pretty good value at 5/1!). But in the meantime, check out this cool look at how the rest of the world took the news, and don't forget to check out our record-breaking take on yesterday's historic birth.Iconic car brand Aston Martin celebrates its 100th anniversary this year and the luxury automaker decided to give its fans an up-close-and-personal take this week. More than 550 Aston Martin cars were parked in Kensington Gardens for fans to see Monday, totalling a worth of over £1 billion ($1.53 billion) and a century-long legacy. This would seem a perfect chance to attempt the record for the l argest parade of Aston Martin cars but, that record is exactly as it sounds - a parade. This means the cars are required to run a route, whereas yesterday's lot all stayed parked. The number to beat for such a parade record is 200 vehicles.Lastly, an uplifting story on teamwork and bravery from Japan. After a woman found herself caught between train and track in a metro station in Saitama, near Tokyo, commuters and staff joined together to lift the 32-ton train enough for the pinned woman to escape unharmed. Around here it reminds us of the team of 100, led by Switzerland's Michael Bühler, that pulled a 646,350 kg (1,424,958 lbs) train in 2009 for the heaviest vehicle pulled over 100 m by a team. Teamwork makes the dream work people!
Obama loves broccoli, Qatar's pricey World Cup, and Google goes down - News in World RecordsU.S. president Barack Obama shared his definitive opinion Tuesday on a matter of international dispute: he loves broccoli. When hosting a group of children at the White House's second-annual "Kids State Dinner," Obama fielded a question from one of the attendees asking the president what his favorite food was. And while Obama has been filmed and photographed eating everything from cheeseburgers to ribs, he chose the leafy greens at his top choice. Well, Mr. President, have we got the entree for you: the heaviest broccoli ever weighed 35 lbs (15.87 kg) grown by John and Mary Evans of Palmer, Alaska, USA, in 1993.A report released by Deloitte estimates the nation of Qatar will spend $200 billion (£133.8 billion) over the next 10 years as it prepares to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. First of all, that just sounds like a made-up number. Second, it's part of a trend when it comes to massively expensive sporting events. Last year's Olympics in London were the most expensive Olympic games with sports-related costs of $13.01 billion (£8.4 billion). Two competing sets of data have crowned two different vehicle types as the most-stolen in the U.S.: according to the Highway Loss Data Institute, Ford F-250 pickups are the most likely to be thieved. But the National Highway Safety Administration says Dodge Chargers are a crook's favorite. 1906Misha Collins and friends worldwide set new record for online hugsFilm star, Supernatural TV actor and founder of GISHWHES (Greatest International Scavenger Hunt The World Has Ever Seen) Misha Collins has set a new world record for largest online photo album of hugs, with the help of thousands of participants around the globe. The largest online photo album of hugs contains a total of 108,121 photos for the campaign 'GISHWHES Hugs The World 2013!', which took place from 11-18 August 2013. Misha's also the man behind previous records for the largest media scavenger hunt - with another event in the works coming soon. We spoke to Misha about getting involved in record breaking, hugs and garden gnomes. How did the record come about?I’ve always had a fascination with hugging (I’m not really particular about who or what it is I’m embracing as long as there’s a “squish” factor).I also have had a lifelong dream of hugging over 100,000 people in one week.I’ve been really busy managing my garden gnome collection, so I realized getting thousands of other people to do it for me would be much easier and probably a bit more hygienic. (Of course, I also like the idea of using our scavenger hunt as a tool to bring people together worldwide, but that’s a trivial detail.) How do you feel about the response and how does it feel to be a record breaker. It’s great to see so many people step forward and show a little (PG-rated) love on the Internet in what has become a bit of a platform for gloom, doom and gaudy showmanship.I’m always impressed by the artistry and enthusiasm of people that take part in GISHWHES. For those who don’t know, “GISHWHES” is the acronym for the Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World Has Ever Seen, an event which has broken one or two Guinness World Records every year, so if you—dear reader—want to participate in breaking a world record this year, you should join GISHWHES.com.I promise you won’t regret participating (unless you’re someone who hates fun.) Any Guinness World Records plans for the upcoming GISHWHES Scavenger Hunt?Yes! We plan on breaking at least two.One of them may or may not involve costumery - is that a word? Can you please have your in-house publishing team check my vernacular? ( Ed: It is) You can view a full gallery of the online hugs at www.gishwhes.com/hugsgallery.php
Canadian firm breaks Superman world recordFrom Amanda Mochan in CalgaryOn Wednesday, September 28, I was in Calgary, Alberta, Canada for a record attempt for the largest gathering of people dressed as Superman. The attempt was made by the employees of Nexen Inc., a Canadian energy company. The previous record was 288 participants, set in Ireland in August last year. Nexen was aiming high - they expected at least 400 participants - and the attempt was for a good cause. Nexen used the record attempt to kick off their corporate United Way fundraising campaign, which had the theme "Be a Superhero". According to Guinness World Records guidelines, the Superman costume must consist of a blue full body cover outfit, red underpants worn over the blue suit, an 'S' sign on the front of the chest in red and yellow, a yellow belt, red boots, and a red cape. Instead of leaving the costumes to chance, Nexen decided to order identical costumes for employees. It's worth noting that Nexen took the trouble to confirm that the costumes were all ethically and humanely made.Prior to the official start time, employees registered and donned their Superman outfit. I was stationed at the single entrance to the attempt (which took place in an enclosed park adjacent to the company building), and hand counted each Superman that entered. After all were accounted for, I had a total of 437 participants. The Supermen still had to stay gathered together for ten minutes for the record to be official. An emcee kept the crowd going, and employees were told a bit more about the United Way giving campaign. Everyone was in high spirits, and there was even a special guest in the crowd - a dog dressed in a full Superman getup, complete with cape and fake arms. While he didn't count towards the record total, Superdog was a hit with all who attended. After the ten minutes was up, I was able to announce a new Guinness World Records achievement of 437 participants, and officially presented the certificate to Nexen CEO Marvin Romanow. Congratulations go out to Nexen staff who organized the event (special recognition to Gregory John, Andrea Bosnjak, Melanie Swenson and Lisa Sills), United Way employees who took the time to attend, and most importantly, Nexen employees who gave up their lunch breaks to participate in such a worthwhile event. Congratulations!video

However, with a forecast of rain, and Guinness World Records guidelines requring the ground to be dry for a record to be ratified, the official attempts were pushed forward a day earlier.A proud Han after his certificate presentationHan says his motivation for the attempts was to bring the parallel parking record back to China and highlight that his nation has world-leading drivers.
